This is a Georgian Loyalist house, which was owned in its early years by Gideon White (a prominent Loyalist). In the period 1910-1938, the house was owned by Robert Irwin who became Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia in the 1930s. For these reasons, the house is a Provincial Registered Heritage Property. It is also a Municipally Registered Heritage Property. The property incorporates five of the original 1784 lots in the waterfront area. It has one of the largest gardens in the Historic District. The house frontage occupies the whole block between St. Patrick's Lane and Rodney Lane. The house was purchased by the present owners in 1992, since when it has been completely restored.
This house is located in the Historic District of Shelburne, which contains 45 houses built before 1900. The house is only 100 metres from Shelburne Harbour and a three minute walk to the Yacht Club, Osprey Arts Centre, Historic Cox Shipyard museum, and town wharf. It is close to other museums, and fine dining (Charlotte Lane Restaurant), as well as banking, fitness, medical and dental facilities.
Shelburne is located on the south coast of Nova Scotia on a large, well-protected harbour that provides excellent sailing conditions. During the summer its yacht club and marina plays host to visitors from many countries. The town was established in 1783 by United Empire Loyalists. Next to the harbour is the Town's Historic District.
It is a short walk to fine dining, a bakery and other shopping, one of the Town’s banks, the Town Hall, post office, yacht club and marina, museums, cinema, Osprey Arts Centre, three churches, a doctor and pharmacy.
