Pampatar is the town adjacent to Porlamar on the South Coast of Margarita. It was the original area for settlement on the Island due to the deep water bay, ideal for a port. The sheltered location from the Caribbean currents and being far from the Hurricane path, made it a favourite harbour of pirates in the days of Blackbeard and the like. Pampatar is the site of the Fort, known as San Carlos Borromeo Castle.
