Area Information
Abingdon is a historic market town approximately 7 miles from Oxford. Abingdon lays claim to being the oldest town in Britain, dating back to the Iron Age, and to having had the first monastery in England. Its history is intertwined with that of the Abbey. The property is situated on land which used to be the Abbey's vineyards. The property is located close to the shops and restaurants of the town centre where high street shops are intermingled with more individual and unique shops. Buses run into Oxford every 10 minutes or so at peak times (with night buses running less frequently but till quite late) from just outside the property. Local schools have a good reputation, and there is plenty to do as regards sports and leisure; the White Horse Leisure and Tennis Centre offers indoor tennis facilities, swimming, gymnasium etc and the Abingdon and Witney College offers courses in just about everything from aromatherapy to equestrian management. In addition there is a lido which is open in the summer months and various activities on the river.
