By CINDY SWIRKO Sun staff writerMay 12. 2007 6:01AM Another old house in southeast Gainesville has been converted into a bed and breakfast - the third on its short stretch of street and the fourth in the neighborhood. The B&B boomlet has turned a corner of east of downtown into a destination that is being touted by local tourism officials and is a mecca for visitors who want more home than hotel. The Camellia Rose Inn, which opened recently, is the latest bed and breakfast. With six rooms, the Camellia Rose was completely renovated but some original features remain, including the heart pine floors and a section of tin ceiling, said owner Pat McCants. So far the task of running it is everything the McCants had hoped it would be. "We've been open six weeks and pretty much booked every weekend. Business is incredible," McCants said. "We have so enjoyed this. I can't believe I haven't done this all my life. We've had a blast. We've met some of the most incredible people." The Camellia Rose joins the Laurel Oak Inn and the Magnolia Plantation Inn as the B&Bs on a short stretch of SE 7th Street. The Sweetwater Branch Inn is nearby on E. University Avenue. John Pricher of the Alachua County Visitors and Convention Bureau said having the B&Bs is good for tourism, and having them so close is good for promoting them to travel writers and other industry-related professionals. "It's great that they are all in one little quadrant. We had a group of travel writers here and it allowed us to show them all off even though they didn't all necessarily have overnight stays," Pricher said. "People who stay in a bed and breakfast - it's a niche market. They are looking for something a little different. Being in that quadrant makes it a neat thing for the visitors and for us." The section of 7th Street between SE 2nd Avenue and Depot Avenue has been gradually transforming from a somewhat down-at-the-heels neighborhood into a revitalized lane of renovated homes. Some of the larger ones have become the inns while the smaller bungalows are attracting young, urban-oriented home buyers. Historic preservationist Melanie Barr said the effort began with the renovation and opening of the Magnolia Plantation by Joe and Cindy Montalto in 1991. "It's a wonderful thing to see southeast Gainesville blossoming," Barr said. "Not only are the beautiful inns located there, but now other homeowners are settling there in the smaller and mid-level houses." The city of Gainesville's Community Redevelopment Agency is enhancing the look of the area by spending just under $100,000 on streetscaping for decorative lighting, said agency manager Anthony Lyons. "It's a great historic neighborhood," Lyons said. "The whole neighborhood is coming around." McCants said the inn has won a beautification award from the city for excellence in renovation and adapted reuse. The U.S. has more than 20,000 B&Bs with more than 148,000 rooms, according to the Professional Association of Keepers of the Inn, an industry trade group. Small inns are a $3.4 billion industry nationwide.
