Often in our enthusiasm to find wilderness and peace and quiet, we overlook areas closer to home. Norway is just across the North Sea… an hour and half by plane… Yet there two and a half thousand miles of pine trees, lakes mountains and pristine wilderness, Norway is a must for those seeking tranquillity and nature within easy reach. Life here is simpler and quieter with many city dwellers retreating to their weekend cabin for the gentle pleasures of hiking, skiing, fishing and relaxing in front of the fire. Fresh clean air, empty roads, invigorating outdoor activities, wholesome food, stunning scenery and seclusion are what its all about, although Norway has its fair share of cultural activities, festivals, history and modern urban sophistication too.

The Norwegian word for cabin is “Hytte”…. Simply translated means “hut” … but it holds a higher status in Norway than the English word implies. A quarter of the population own a “hytte” … They are usually situated deep in the forest or by the sea and offer Norwegians a refuge from every day life. Almost going back to their roots… of simply constructed wooden buildings with grass roofs. This change of life style… consists of chopping wood for the wood stove, boiling the water for the coffee on the same wood stove, fishing and hunting all make up the wilderness experience that not so very long ago was the way most people in Norway existed.
These “Hytte” are sacred to their owners… and are to be taken very seriously. The time spent at these cabins is for spending quality time with family and only special friends are invited.
Another Norwegian word is sæter. This is an upland grazing area… where cattle roam in the summertime, in complete contrast to the harshness of winter. The sæter fields are often so steep that the children were tied to trees to stop them rolling downhill! The responsibility was often left to the eldest daughter, who would live alone for the summer months, tending the goats sheep and cows…
Both the hytte and many of the sæter communities now rent out these properties. Some have been upgraded with modern facilities but many still retain the “rustic charm” of earlier times. The only comparison in Britain maybe… is the “potting shed” at the bottom of the garden used retreat from the daily grind.
You will find cabins for rent along the coast and fjords, in the woods, valleys and mountains. Some are available for very short periods, others for a minimum of one week. Standards vary from the extremely simple to the very luxurious. What they all offer, however, is the opportunity to experience the traditional Norwegian cottage cosiness that just can not compare with staying in a room in towns.
At the cabin you organise your time as you like. Or more to the point not organise it at all. Simply enjoy life!
