| Close to Montguyon – a mediaeval village
The mediaeval village of Montguyon lies inland, in the southern hills of the Charente-Maritime department, in the west of France. With its ruined mediaeval castle and atmospheric historical “Old Town”, Montguyon attracts many visitors in the holiday season.
Twice weekly markets
Montguyon hosts not one but two weekly markets, giving you a chance to purchase great local produce fresh from the farms on both Wednesday and Saturday mornings. In the warm summer months the town is also the location for some wonderful night markets. If you haven't attended one of these very “French” affairs before then don't miss this chance to do so, they are a terrific experience. The tantalising aromas of roasting chickens and herbs scent the air, and your appetite will be boosted even further by a tasting of aperitifs of the local beverages, pineau and cognac. You will find stalls selling lovely hand-crafted jewellery, paintings and even sculptures by local artists as well as foodstuffs and all manner of pretty glazed pots.
Shops and amenities in Montguyon
Montguyon has a good array of shops and amenities, and offers a supermarket too for all those essentials. There is a butchers, a bakers, a bank, a post office, a cinema and a petrol station... so life is pretty much taken care of without you even having to leave the village! There are some restaurants as well, offering the chance to sample local fare in pleasant surroundings, and even a pizza take away for those nights when you just want to slouch at home and not worry about the cooking. |
