About this 2 - Detached

The croft-house at No. 9 Portvoller, on the Point peninsula of the Isle of Lewis, is situated ten miles from Stornoway, the commercial and administrative centre of the island. It is located within a mile of Tiumpanhead Lighthouse on the outmost promontory of the peninsula. On a quarter acre feu, it was built in the 1930s to specifications laid down by the Board of Agriculture. Its walls are of concrete and its roof is slated. Accommodation comprises, on the ground floor, a spacious living-room and kitchen, two bedrooms and a bathroom. Upstairs are two apartments (formerly used as bedrooms) and a box-room. The following are the measures of rooms, etc. Atrium (back porch with small enclosed solid fuel bunker) - 2m x 1.1 m Kitchen - 4.7 m X 2m Living-room - 4.3 m x 3.9 m Bathroom - 2.5m. x 2.2m Front Porch - 2m x 1m. Area Information

The property is on the regular bus-route between Stornoway and Port nan Giùran (Portnaguran). The three hills of Portvoller serve as bastions against the seas of the Minch. From a vantage point on one of those hills, one can see the Minch – the thirty miles wide expanse of ocean that separates the Scottish Highlands from the Western Isles.. To the southwest, one can see the hills of the Isles of Skye, then, following the horizon northwards, the mountains of Inverness-shire and Sutherland, terminating at Cape Wrath, the most north-westerly outpost of the British mainland. The island is famous for its beautiful beaches, historical sites and dramatic coastline. Communication with the Mainland is well developed. Several flights per day link Stornoway Airport with Glasgow, Aberdeen,Edinburgh and Inverness. Flight time to Glasgow Airport is around 50 min and to Inverness 20. There are twice daily ferry services between Stornoway and Ullapool. There are reduced fares for island residents. The crossing takes around two and a half hours. The Minch is teeming with wildlife. The sighting of whales, porpoises, dolphins, and seals is commonplace. Species of bird include gannets, gulls, cormorants, guillemots, puffins and a various species of gull. Sea-angling is a favourite leisure activity as is trout-fishing on the island’s numerous lochs and lochans. Quarter of a mile from No. 9 is the bird sanctuary of Loch an t-Siùmpain. All year round, there are organised social events both in An Lanntair Cultural Centre at Stornoway and in community centres throughout the island. Gaelic, the language of the indigenous population, continues to be strong. For a more extensive emailed slide sequence, contact the vendor.
