| An introduction to Otterburn
This large parish is within easy reach of Tyneside, Edinburgh and the unspoilt Northumbrian coast. The area has for over 2000 years maintained a military connection in this part of the river Rede valley.
In about AD125, the Romans came and built forts, possibly on the site and in the vicinity of bronze and iron age forts. In 1388 the Scottish and English armies faced each other in battle. In the 15th and 16th centuries the cross border skirmishing, food and stock raids was carried out by the clans and families known as the “Border Reivers”. From the turn of the 20th century until the present the Otterburn ranges have been home of the British Army (now with our NATO allies) for modern, tactical weapons training.
Otterburn, literally “the stream frequented by otters” is 22 miles from Hexham and a short 32 miles north west of Newcastle using the A696 trunk road.
Otterburn has a care home, children’s playgroups, a first school and adult education facilities, a church (C of E), two hotels and pubs with restaurants. Along with other organisations, members of a Women's Institute meet in the village. |
