Villena is an old town, with an ancient castle of Arabic origin. The original centre of occupation was at the foot of this fortress. The town then spread from there. The inhabitants of Villena are polite and friendly and the economy of the town is based on footwear (like in the neighbouring cities of Elda and Novelda), pottery, furnitures and wine. This is border town, a doorway between the bright Mediterranean coast and the austere plain.
Some places of tourist interest in Villena are : the Municipal Palace, which keeps the Treasure of Villena, the Castle of la Atalaya, the gothic church of Santiago and the Archeological Museum. It also important its festival of MORO Y CRISTIANOS. The festival is nearly two centuries old, and is one of the most famous in the country.
