Built in 1782 by frontiersman John Chisholm at the foot of the "Old Indian Ridge," this historic home has evolved from log cabin and federal-style plantation house--from stage coach inn and B&B--to a completely restored 4300 square-foot home on 4.4 private acres in Jonesborough (the oldest town in Tennessee and the first town established outside the original 13 colonies). Within easy walking distance, the historic center offers cultural activities, upscale shopping, and fine dining.
The home features 5 large bedroom suites with baths, large gourmet kitchen with custom walnut cabinetry plus a small gourmet kitchen for entertaining, a separate 750 square foot artist studio/apartment, civil war era springhouse and barn, fully fenced pastures, outbuildings, views and more. Manicured grounds feature mature trees, including maple, walnut, apple, elm, and many indigenous varieties. Horses are allowed. Improved pasture delivers 16 round bales of hay each year.
Working with preservationists, the home has been returned to the spirit and appearance of the late 18th century. All interior surfaces were uncovered and restored or replaced with materials of like kind. All ceilings, floors, and walls are wooden plank. Original oak logs and hand hewn chestnut beams have been exposed. All moldings are either original or custom mill reproductions made to the patterns of the originals. Old doors and hardware were retained and restored or replicated. Historic paint recipes were used throughout and the colors are authentic to the period. The usual 21st century mod-cons have been added including Electrolux and Thermador appliances, dual glazed windows, 4 zoned heating/cooling, and commercial grade fire/safety alarm system. All wiring, plumbing, fixtures, roofing, have been replaced. The house has a full basement and excellent storage options throughout
