Area Information
Village of Palamartsa, with population of 710 inhabitants, is located in North-East Bulgaria. It is part of Popovo Municipality, Targovishte District. The town of Popovo is just 8 km away and Targovishte stands at 44km south- east. The city of Varna and the tempting Black Sea Coast is 129 km away, while the border town of Ruse is only 100 km away, which turns Targovishte into a natural strategic crossroad. The region is known for its both hilly and plain terrain. The rivers have low waters and most of them dry out in summer. The Black Lom River, the Vrana River, and the Grand (Golyama) River are the larger among them. There are spa springs near Targovishte. The region has transport importance. It is crossed by Hemus Highway and Sofia- Varna railroad. The region is also known as an agricultural and wine producing region with plenty of artificial lakes and dense forests rich in game and picturesque landscape.The Chardonnay and Muskat wines from the Targovishte region are prominent all over the world. Archaeological data shows that there has been a certain human presence in this area even during the copper and stone epoch - 5th to 4th millennium BC. Remains of antiquity of Thracian settlements (5th to 4th century BC), a settlement from the Roman epoch (3rd to 5th century AD) and a fortress from the Early Byzantine epoch (5th to 6th century) have been discovered in the surroundings of the town. A settlement from the First Bulgarian country, a settlement, and a fortress from the Second Bulgarian country have also been discovered. There are conditions at hand for fishing, hunting, and ecotourism in the region.
