About this 3 - Unusual
Island farm of 129 acres with good range of farm buildings including equestrian menage. The farm straddles the north west tip of the island of Shapinsay and so only has neighbours to the south. Careful management over the years has led to a wide range of habitats on the farm. We run rare breed cattle and sheep on the farm who help with the work of developing the habitats. For a lot more details and pictures please look at the farm website: www.farmofgarth.co.uk
Shapinsay is an island sitting about 5 miles off the east coast of mainland Orkney. There are 6 ferries daily running between Shapinsay and Kirkwall, the "capital" of mainland Orkney. There are some 300 folk on the island which is largely a farming community although the good ferry links do allow island residents to commute to Kirkwall for work. There is a general store, a doctor, a fitness suite and a well run community hall on the island.
