Area Information |
| Åmål (pop. 13,000) is the only town in Dalsland, the area to the west of Lake Vänern, founded in the reign of Queen Christina (1643). After numerous fires which destroyed many of the town's old wooden houses it was largely rebuilt in stone. The old quarter by the Municipal Park - the area, including the old market square, which is known as Plantaget - is therefore a tourist attraction.
Vågmästaregården, an early 18th century house, was for many years the residence of the local railroad manager, and frequently also of the burgomaster. Nearby is another 18th century house, Dalgrensgården, with a slate roof. In the beautiful Örnäspark are Hembygdsgården, with a collection of furniture and domestic equipment from the surrounding area, and a wildlife park. There is also a beach restaurant from which there is a fine view of Lake Vänern. |
