Area Information |
| CONTRADA CASE SPARSE no. 39 (351 a.s.l.) is situated in the hills of the country (la campagna) of Montefino (375m a.s.l.) in the province of Teramo, Italy.
The provinces Pescara, Chieti, l’Aquila and Teramo form the Abruzzo.
Montefino is situated on a hill overlooking the Fino valley. Until the 19th century Montefino was called Montesecco, meaning ‘dry mountain’ because of a site lacking in springs. In 1863, however, it adopted its current name which refers to the river Fino. Montefino is connected with Aiterhofen in Bayern, Germany.
The old fortress, or Castello di Corte, whose Norman form and features are still recognisable, occupies the highest part of the town. On the terraces below this developed the later medieval town, with a second castle, the Castello degli Acquaviva, and an eighteenth-century church dedicated to Saint James the Great, the Chiesa di San Giacomo Apostolo, whose fabric includes an external portal of the 16th century recovered from an abandoned abbey nearby.
Annual festival: Feast of St. James on 25 July.
Montefino has got its own post office, two supermarkets, florist, pharmacy, elementary school, wine bar, laundry, gift shop, garage, petrol station, bank, bars, butchery and gym. Free Italian lessons are given in Penne and Loreto, two times a week.
The baker from Castiglione comes 3 times a week to the house. A mobile fruit and vegetable van comes every day (including Sunday) on the piazza of Montefino.
The fishmonger comes on Thursday.
The postman delivers the post every day. The veterinarian is situated in Castiglione.
Castiglione has their own olive oil mill. They sell extra virgin olive oil, chilli pepper flavoured and lemon flavoured extra virgin olive oil.
Montefino is surrounded by the Calanchi. When you look at the view from the house, you will see the Calanchi.
Through tens of thousands of years these impressive canyon-like geological formations were formed of erosion of the clayey terrain. They are a major feature of the coastal landscape. Sometimes called the “scrimoni” for their pit-like resemblance to the landscape of Dante’s Inferno.
Various examples of flora and fauna have found a natural habitat here. There have been numerous spottings of birds of prey, such as buzzards and hawks. If you want to visit the nature reserve, follow the road outside Atri to Teramo and take the turn-off Tre Ciminiere. Follow the sign of the “Riserva Naturale Calanchi di Atri”. E-mail for opening hours: calatri@interfree.it or phone/fax: 085 - 8780088 or visit the Atri town hall.
In Summer you can go to the beach of Pineto.
In Winter you can go cross-country skiing at Campo Imperatore, an immense plateau in the heart of the Gran Sasso’s chain. In some points it overcomes 2.000 mt of altitude and many compared it to a “small Tibet”. |
