Area Information |
| Cape Kaliakra is situated 60 km northeast from the proclaimed as "sea-resort Capital of Bulgaria" – Varna. The shore is 70 m high cliff leaning over the Black Sea. In translation the name means “beautiful cape”. Besides the southing horizon, here you can see cormorants nesting by or dolphins and seals sliming around near the shore.
The place relates to a legend telling the heartrending story of 40 courageous bulgarian girls. Instead of giving into the hands of the Ottoman repressor, they went to the edge of the cliff and after tying together their hairs jumped into the splashing waters.
The “Kaliakra” Natural Reserve was announced in 1960 and it currently has an area of 687.5 dca with wild steppes and impressive coastal cliffs, some up to 70 m high. The flora numbers over 400 species. 47 of them are rare and threatened with extinction. Kaliakra is among the few places in Europe where the rose-colored starling, the black wheatear, the stone curlew, the Isabelline wheatear, the shag and the Alpine swift nest. That is why it attracts hundreds of people from Bulgaria and beyond year after year… The village of Kamen Bryag and the rocky coast in front of it is a magnet for virgin nature beauty admirers, which come in crowds every summer to welcome the first July sunrise. The countryside “Ogancheto” (“The little fire” from Bulgarian) is very popular among the rock and hippie fans of Bulgaria. From far back Kamen Bryag is inextricably linked with the “children of the sun” and the July Morning feast. The national archaeological reserve ‘Yailata’ is situated 2 km away from Kamen bryag in south and 18 km away from Kavarna in north-eastern. It is a seaside ledge covering 300 decares (45, 3 hectares) and is detached from the sea by 50-60 meters high rock massifs. “Yailata” is inhabited by people for about seven centuries. Thracians, Romans, Greeks, Slavs and proto-Bulgarians have lived here. The discovered ancient temples are a testament to the cult of various heathen deities. In “Yailata” an ancient Thracian necropolis from the second century with two-chamber tombs was found. 101 cave dwellings were discovered in the region - a cave ‘city’ of 101 ‘apartments’, settled as far back as V century B.C. Three necropolises (family tombs) out of III- IV century have been hollowed out in the rocks. Necropolis №1 has come onto being near a whittled down sanctuary, facing the rising sun. A little early- Byzantine stronghold is situated in the northern part of ‘The Big Yaila’. It is built in the late V century. One tower- gate and four towers are partially preserved. There are also a sanctuary, sacrificial stones, and wineries, four dug into tombs, which have been reserved since the Antiquity. During the middle Ages, the caves have been used as a monastery complex. There are some proto- Bulgarian signs on their walls- runes, crosses and stone icons.
Among the annual events organized in Kamen Bryag are:
• Village-wide fair with a folklore program on 3 July
• Cliff-climbing competition in August
• Workshop “Sea and Wind” with the participation of artists and sculptors from around the country and abroad in September
The huge arc of the Kaliakra gulf is the only protection of ships against the northern and eastern winds since ancient times and it is a natural wharf for loading and unloading ships. There are signs of arrival of ships in Rusalka and the Yailata. Once, when fishers pulled out their fishing-nets from a depth of about 60m, they found remains of antique and medieval ships. Treasures and shipwrecks waiting divers north of Cape Kaliakra. In Albena, Balchik and Rusalka there are diving centers, who offer diving and water sports for everyone who would like to discover the Black Sea and its underwater world and shipwrecks. Yalata and Cape Kaliakra are visited by over 400,000 tourists every summer. |
