Area Information |
| The first small community of French Huguenots landed in the Cape in 1688, looking for the ultimate terroir to continue their craft of master wine-making. They settled in the spectacular valleys of Franschhoek and Paarl, which have now been proclaimed as world heritage sites.
Established in the heart of this area, the Val de Vie Wine & Polo Estate lies on land that produced its first wine in 1825. The historic manor house has been caringly restored with the centuries old oak trees still standing guard. Plans are underway to renovate the traditional, old cellar with its original open wine fermentors (“kuipe”) into a cellar where tradition meets the latest technology to produce first-class wines.
Residents of Val de Vie Wine & Polo Estate will be able to enjoy their own piece of this celebrated valley, living the grand life those first French wine-makers envisaged. Home owners have the opportunity of learning the art of winemaking under Val de Vie’s own winemaker and, under his tutelage, produce their very own “boutique” wine for their exclusive use and enjoyment.
A walk through the landscaped estate grounds is a walk through our unique South African heritage - leafy boulevards, watched over by the stately peaks of the Drakenstein Mountains. Situated in the Paarl-Franschhoek valley, the local terroir is ideally suited to the traditional Rhône cultivars, as confirmed by experts following a comprehensive study - the balanced, unique interaction between soil and climate in the area adds to the complexity of the Val de Vie wines.
“It is the unpredictability of nature that gives personality to our wines…” quotes Martin Fourie, acclaimed wine-maker at Val de Vie.
Val de Vie is the most comprehensive grower of Rhône varietals outside of France, currently growing 10 of the 14 traditional Rhône cultivars at Val de Vie. Vine material not available in South Africa is to be imported under contract to Val de Vie and will be used to create the most complete Rhône blend of any New World producer ever.
It is early days for Val de Vie’s wines, but these young wines are already winning awards and accolades. The Val de Vie Mourvèdre (2004) was awarded a Double Gold Medal at the Michelangelo International Awards in 2006, and the Val de Vie Shiraz (also 2004) won a Gold Medal at the SA Young Wine Show.
The Val de Vie Founder’s Selection, a Shiraz-dominated blend, was launched in 2005 and it is anticipated that it will become the “flagship” of the Val de Vie wines, and one of South Africa’s cult wines. Another first for the Val de Vie Wine & Polo Estate will be the Coffee Pinotage, which is to be introduced in June 2009, adding another unique wine to its growing cellar. |
