Area Information
The lively town of Belmullet is the principal town of the barrony of Erris which is in north Co Mayo, on the west Atlantic coast of Ireland. The highly rated Carne Golf Links is 4 km from the house and there are nearby Gaeltacht schools serving as an Irish language centres and water sport facilities. (Uisce and Eachleim) This is a strong Gaeltacht area, where the native Irish language is spoken fluently, and is rich in tradition and culture. The area offers many attractions including extensive unspoilt beaches, two of which have Blue Flag status, namely Mullach Rua and Elly. For the watersport enthusiast there is a choice of sheltered crystal clear waters off the eastern shore, while the more exposed western shoreline is ideally suited to wind surfing, canoeing and sailing (equipment and tuition available locally). Blacksod Bay which is an ideal location for deep sea angling, is inhabited by 36 different species of fish, and national and international competitions are held in the Summer. A visit to the beautiful, tranquil and historical islands of Inishkea North and South, Inis Glora and Dubh Oilen, where monasteries flourished in Early Christian Times, is a must. Boat trips to the islands are easilly available, weather permitting. The Inishkeas are internationally important with respect to birdlife, as half the wintering population of Barnacle geese winter here. Eachleim has a strong maritime tradition, and at least two Spanish Armada ships sailed into Blacksod Bay. For those wishing to gain a valuable insight into the Eachleim area a visit to Ionad Deirbhile Heritage Centre is well worthwhile. Erris is a barony in northwestern County Mayo in Ireland consisting of over 210,000 acres (850 km2), much of which is mountainous blanket bogIt has extensive sea coasts along its west and north boundaries. The main towns are Belmullet and Bangor Erris. The name Erris derives from the Irish 'Iar Ros' meaning 'western promontory'. To its north is the wild Atlantic Ocean and the bays of Broadhaven and Sruth Fada Conn and to its west is Blacksod Bay. Its main promontories are the Doohoma Peninsula, Mullet Peninsula, Erris Head, the Dún Chiortáin and Dún Chaocháin peninsulas and Benwee Head
