Overview
Situated on a quiet street in the heart of the Essaouira medina, this 4-bed riad extends over three floors, built around a central courtyard, and has an airy, Moroccan chic feel. With a tiled plunge-pool on the lower terrace, as well as an additional top terrace overlooking the town and nearby countryside, the property is close to the central market streets, and is easy to find from the main entrance to the medina.
Fully renovated within the last year, with concrete support columns and beams, the house is structurally strong, with most of the first floor and areas of the terrace being newly built. It also has newly installed plumbing and electricity systems.
Ground Floor
With high vaulted arches and stone columns, the ground floor has traditional pastel blue/pink bashmat tiling, and a calm, clean feel. On the back wall of the central courtyard is a fountain, with tiered stone bowls and mosaic surround. Leading off the central courtyard is a large salon, with traditional thuya wood ceiling, stone arched windows overlooking the courtyard, and a cozy fireplace.
Also adjoining the courtyard is the kitchen, with tadelakt worktops and high arched recesses in the walls, and a vaulted arch leading through to the dining room. Like the salon, both rooms have high, thuya wood ceilings, with an additional stone arched window between the dining room and salon.
First Floor
The high, beamed ceilings and light-reflecting bashmat give the first floor a cool, airy feel. Comprising 2 double bedrooms, and a white tadelakt bathroom (+ wc) with polished marble countertop, there is also a separate WC with windows overlooking the street.
Mezzanine (double) bedroom: with original colourful tiling and a cast iron spiral staircase leading up to the bed, the room has an office/desk area, with built-in cupboards and internet and telephone connections.
“Pink” room: also retaining the original black and white tiling, this light-filled room has shuttered windows overlooking the courtyard, and a large alcove, with built-in cupboard and shelving.
Second Floor
Bathed in sunlight throughout the day, with black and white tiling and colourful, carved Berber doors, the second floor has two double bedrooms (one ensuite) and a separate shower room.
“Sahara room”: with windows overlooking the balcony and courtyard, this spacious room has a copper washbasin in the corner with colourful mosaic surround and shelves.
Ensuite room: usable as a twin or a double, the room leads onto the en-suite bathroom, with a huge red tadelakt bath, copper washbasin and WC.
Leading up to the terrace, the light-filled shower room, with glass bricks and blue and mirrored tiles, has blue tadelack seating, shelves and sink, and positively twinkles!
Lower Terrace
Enjoying full sunshine throughout the day, the larger lower terrace enjoys complete privacy. With a small plunge-pool (seats 4 – 6), built in seating and a raised table area, there is also a small wash/storage room with sink and boiler.
Upper Terrace
With steps leading up the side of the pool, the top terrace has spectacular views of the surrounding medina and countryside.
