Area Information |
| Zutphen, The Netherlands
Besides its splendid townscape, Zutphen has a unique attraction - the promenade along the banks of the river IJssel offers abundant opportunity to enjoy the leisured beauty of the river.
Art and history enthusiasts are amply provided for by the two museums: the Municipal Museum with its collection of artefacts and the Henriette Polak Museum with its collection of modern art. On your wanderings through the old town, you will see numerous historic buildings. Unique is the Librije, a beautifully preserved 16th century library of manuscripts on chain, built onto the Walburg Church.
From the Martinetsingel, you can see what Zutphen looked like in the early Middle Ages. The old town wall is still there in all its splendour and behind it are the picturesque roofs of century-old houses. On the Martinetsingel you can also find the Drogenaps Tower, dating from 1446. Another eye-catching defence, bearing witness to a glorious past, is the Berkel Ruin on the Hagepoort Square.
The town is famous for its Thursday and Saturday markets, while the centre offers excellent shopping facilities. There are various sports facilities for energetic visitors, including water sports. A day in Zutphen may be concluded by a visit to the theatre, the art cinema or one of the many cafes and restaurants.
Zutphen is easily accessible. The town is a junction of important water, railway and road connections. |
