The captivating charm of the Sheeps Head Peninsula (officially one of the world’s best-kept secrets) has to be seen to be believed. Despite its compact size, there is a stunning variety of breathtaking views all along its 30km length. There is a strong island-like sense of community here, where all newcomers are quickly assimilated to become part of the fabric of this beautiful & vibrant area. This haven of friendly tranquillity is just an hour-and-a-half from Cork city and International Airport. Durrus, the village at the head of Dunmanus Bay and the Southern gateway to the peninsula, is pretty and will-equipped to meet the needs of the local residents: It has 4 shops, 4 pubs, 2 primary schools, 2 churches a Gaelic Games pitch, a soccer pitch, a recycling centre, a toddlers’ group and a couple of first-class restaurants. Along the Southern coast of the Sheeps Head, there are numerous places for sailing, swimming and fishing. The villages of Ahakista and Kilcrohane each provide a focal point and facilities. On the North side, the coastline changes again to a more rugged and dramatic nature. Like many communities in the area, it is served by the regular bus services of Bus Éireann and the Bantry Rural Transport Scheme. There are numerous places to stay on this enchanting peninsula. One of the best known and one which prides itself on being a focal point for the growing number of walking enthusiasts (as well as relaxation and good conversation enthusiasts) is the famous Seamount Farm B&B. If it’s the more traditional Irish form of relaxation that you’re after (i.e. drink, chat & music), then the choice of places to partake of these is fairly bewildering. One place that does it very successfully and is difficult to resist calling into is the legendary “Tin Pub” in Ahakista. It oftens goes under the name of “Tin Shack”, “Tin Shed” and others, but all names lead to this familiar Sheep’s Head institution which boasts a wonderful beer garden by the sea and regular music sessions.
