Area Information

Location: 59 km to the south of Varna is situated the health resort Byala. In Ancient times it was known as a Hellenic colony, called Aspro. Proof to this are the ancient stone anchors, found on the seashore. They and some parts of Greek amphoraes date back to 6th century BC. There is a Roman fortress where are found many Greek and roman coins. These finds are exhibited in the centre of demonstration "White rocks" in Byala. Since the year 681 the settlement has been a part of the First Bulgarian state. Around the shore there is a system of fortificated swells from these times. Nowadays Byala is a modern town thanks to the wine- growing. The famous wine "Dimiat" is produced in this town. Byala is also a seaside resort with many private holiday houses for tourists. There is a perfect combination of beach with gold sands and broad leaved forest. These factors make it an excellent place for seaside tourism. The sea water is very clean because there are not any factories near. It gives the optimum for a nice and still rest. The town of Byala is the fourth place on the earth where are found signs of the planet cataclysm of the Earth which brought to extinction of the dinosaurs. That landmark is known with the name of "White rocks". Only 6km from Byala is the town of Obzor which was called during the past times Heliopopolis- town of the sun. Between the two towns there are the cam pings "Moon", "Sun" and "Space" which give the opportunity for holiday with your own transport and tents, but there are built big summer houses. The nearest camping to the town is “Christina”. • The famous Kamchia reserve is 30km south of the city of Varna. The Kamchia River runs through it and permanently forms a sand barrier. Its waters often overflow its banks to the valley. By this way appeared an overgrowth which is an impressive forest with gigantic trees entwined by climbing plants such as ivy and traveler’s joy. It is a real tangle of woods and the sun hard struggle through it. This is the Longoz - a real virgin jungle with 40 tree species. The most impressive are the old elms, oaks, ash-trees and maples. The old syncline of the river leaves swampy areas, called “azmatsi”. They give the final touch to the mysterious appearance of the forest, inclining branches over the yellowish waters. Rushes, yellow and blue irises, buttercups grow on the banks and between them distinguishes the royal beauty of the white blossoms of the water-lily. The fascination of the place attracts both nature lovers and naturalists. In the reserve you can see rare representatives of the Bulgarian flora and fauna. This ecosystem numbers over 200 species of higher plants. Most of them are listed in the Bulgarian Red book. Picking plants and bushes is absolutely forbidden. The variety of 25 fish species has given occasion for the forming a small fishing village. In addition there are 14 reptile and amphibian species, such as rare birds, propagating in the reserve. The most interesting of them are the red stork, the big hawk and so on. They are all protected by the Bern convention about the conservation of the Wild European Nature. North of the river mouth there is a lovely beach strip with fine sands which is a favorite place for many people from Varna. The sea is more shallow and less salted because of the flowing of the river. • The remarkable stone columns, well known as Pobitite kamani, are unique geological phenomenon. They are 18 km in west of Varna, on the land of the villages of Slanchevo, Banovo, Strashimirovo, Beloslav and Povelyanovo. In the semi desert region are located, in big and small groups, enormous stone columns which form a belt with direction north-south and longitude of 8 km.They have different sizes with height ranging from 0,7 to 5,9 m and diameter from 0,7 to 2,6 m. The most visited group is well known as Central or Dikilitashka. It numbers around 300 large and small columns, forming an 810 m long and 115 m wide strip. Some of the columns are hollow in the middle, others are thick. Some of them have fascinating shapes because of the weathering. There are many theories for the origin of Pobitite kamani. Scientists reckon that 50 million years ago it was a sea bottom, later the region gradually dried up, and erosion processes began. Under the influence of the earth processes the limestone cracked, the precipitations fallen on the superficies of the rocks, saturated with carbonic acid, and gradually digested the limestone. Its closeness to Varna, makes the area an attractive and interesting place.
