Area Information |
| The description of this region has to begin with a superlative: among the peaks of the Mátra, covered with oak and beech forests, is the highest place in Hungary, the Kékestetô (Blue Top), which rises to 1014 metres. This special geographical place is only 20 minutes away from the house and attracts many visitors and there is much else to see too. It is a world of picturesque valleys and peaks revealing their true beauty in the summertime, mysterious hills covered by autumn fog and winter snow sparkling in the sun and welcoming skiers. All this is what attracts thousands to the versatile Mátra. From the round-shaped look-out on the 186 metre Kékes TV tower a bird's-eye view of the country can be had. The second highest place in Hungary, Galyatetô, is nearby. 'Kekes' is the 'top of' Hungary, the highest peak (1014 m) can be found in the Matra-hill. You can see a unique panorama from the 38 m belvedere of the 187 m high TV-tower. This is the centre of the winter sports: you can use the ski-trucks, a ski-jumping ramp and a ski-lift. Kekes is a climatic health resort, because the sun shines more even in autumn than any other parts of the country.
One of the most favourite mountain holiday resort of Hungary has excellent air which helps you to recover after illness, it has curative effect in case of exhaustion, anaemia, respiratory and thyroid disease, cardiac and circulatory diseases. Popular holiday resorts in this area are the targets of the rural tourism, like Matrafured, Matrahaza, Matraszentimre.
Here visitors will find an observatory, ski-tracks, Slovak taverns, churches and ruined castle. Another very popular attraction is the Chapel of Mary in Fallóskút, a place of pilgrimage. At the foot of Galyatetô lies the secluded village of Mátraalmás, an ideal place for artists. Picturesque Szorospatak of Bátonyterenye is also to be found here. Mátraháza, at the foot of the Kékes, is both a climatic resort and a centre for winter sports. The main roads cutting the Mátra meet here. Going north, you can visit a chateau of the Károlyi family and the romantic Parádsasvár Manor. You can also look in on the glass factory, and drink from the famous spring waters of Parád, which is referred to by the Palóc people as csevice. The Carriage Museum and the Palóc House are among the things worth seeing in the northern part of the Mátra. There are only two mineral water collections in Europe, and one of them is in the hospital of Parádfürdô. Parád is the starting point for many wonderful excursion, for instance to the Ilona Waterfall or to the National Memorial Park of Recsk. North of Recsk beautiful Mátraderecske welcomes tourists. Here you can see the ruins of Kanázs Castle and visit the carbon dioxide dry bath, which is a unique attraction of the village. Sirok Castle is one of the most beautiful castle ruins in Hungary, due to its setting. This is the starting point for the nationally known 56 kilometre Mátrabérc tour that goes along the ridge of the Mátra. If you go south from Mátraháza on the winding road towards Gyöngyös the place to see is Sástó, which is one of the highest lakes in the country (500 metres above sea-level). One can go boating or fishing here. Mátrafüred is another climatic holiday centre. Trips to many look-outs, ruins and to a water mill start from here. This is an enchanting place where no one should be surprised to glimpse a storybook fawn in some mysterious forest clearing. Mátrafüred is linked to Gyöngyös, the capital of the Mátra, by a narrow gauge railway. This beautiful little village is only 1 km from Markaz. In Gyöngyös,5 km from Markaz , a beautiful town, you must see the Mátra Museum in the Orczy Mansion and the Great Baroque Church, built originally in Gothic style. Hungary's second largest collection of ecclesiastic treasures is also here and the country's only library functioning continuously since the Middle Ages can be found in the Franciscan Monastery. |
