| THE NEIGHBOURHOOD
Extremely good neighbours around the area – will help with anything you might need.
Excellent community spirit. Nethermill village primary school PTA organise events like “Burns Supper”, and other social events in the community hall.
Doctors surgeries in Lochmaben, or Moffat, as well as cottage hospitals. Very good service and treat you like people, not just a number.
Beautiful walks in the AE forest, and surrounding areas. There is also mountain biking in the forest, and fun horse riding days. They also now have a coffee shop with home cooked light lunches and snacks.
There is a small village primary school in Nethermill, and a child minder for younger children. Secondary Schools in Lockerbie and Moffat.
There are a few horses and ponies about the area, and the roads are very quiet for riding.
There is an abundance of wild life. We have owls in the wooded area across the road. Herds of deer, hares, hedgehogs, foxes and red squirrels can be seen in the surrounding fields. Plenty of birds for avid bird watchers – buzzards, sparrow hawks kestrels, kites, pheasants, as well as the garden birds. We even have a woodpecker that visits the bird table.
SHOPPING
Lochmaben, a 5 minute drive away, has a newsagent/post office, a chemist, two general stores, a bakery with tearoom, an Italian ice cream shop/café, good fish and chip shop, pet shop and small library.
Larger supermarkets such as Tesco, Somerfield amd Morrisons can be found in Lockerbie, and Dumfries. There is also Aldi and Lidl in Dumfires, as well as Marks and Spencer, and a range of the usual high street shops.
Moffat and Lockerbie have a farmers market once a month. They also have a range of more individual retail shops selling most things from food to clothing, shoes, and harware items. Lockerbie has a very good butcher shop on the road to Tesco.
EATING OUT
Our favourite places are the High Tae Inn. A small pub/ restaurant serving lovely home cooked food. Very friendly and cosy.
The Lime Tree in Moffat is lovely for a special occasion. Great chef and mouthwatering food.
The fish farm and garden centre in Moffat is good for lunch or coffees, as are most of the tea rooms in the high street.
New Abbey has a lovely tea room and it’s a nice place to go for an afternoon out.
Bruno’s in Dumfries is good for evening meals, and often have special deals in the local paper.
The Heathhall garden centre has a nice conservatory for coffees, cakes and light lunches, with lovely views.
Gracefield art centre have a café for tasty light lunches.
PETROL STATIONS
Nearest one (but not cheapest) is Lochmaben. Somerfield have one in Lockerbie. In Dumfries there are three Tesco petrol stations, and one at Morrisons supermarket.
There are also two in Moffat.
CINEMAS
The burns Centre in Dumfries has a small cinema with restaurant. You can have glass of wine before the film, or you can have coffee and cake if it is an afternoon film. They will send you a regular brochure with the film to be screened over a quarterly period.
Annan has a small comfortable cinema with two screens, and a little sweet and snack shop.
For larger multiplex type cinemas you will need to travel to Carlisle. The train takes 20 minutes from Lockerbie.
GOLF
The closest is an 18 hole course in Lochmaben 3 miles away. They have buggies for hire.
There is a golf range and course on the Lochmaben to Dumfries road, again with buggies for hire. The club house is a bit run down, but I believe they are refurbishing this year.
There are at least another two in Dumfries.
Moffat Golf course is a very popular, and fairly challenging course, especially if you like hill walking. Great views from the top.
FISHING
The river Annan and the Moffat water are the most popular rivers for fishing. There is also plenty of loch fishing nearby in Lochmaben. Mill Loch is free, but there are permits available from the pet shop for all the other lochs.
There is also a fish farm at Moffat and one on the way in to Dumfries. The one at Moffat also has a garden centre, crazy golf and childrens play area, as well as a coffee shop, so you can take all the family. |
