Twisted Pine Estate, is ten acres of undulating land that gently rolls down to the east where it meets the shores of the Mapua Estuary, the largest estuary basin in New Zealand. Atop a small hill sits the main house: 500 square metres of crafted living designed by one of Asia Pacific’s most respected Architects, Studio of Pacific Architecture. The north facing house has been designed to fit with the environment whilst taking the utmost advantage of the priceless views that abound from every angle. Behind the main house, hidden from view, in its own secret valley is Twisted Pine Cottage. A delightful retreat for holiday makers and friends.
The main house is modular in design, with three separate ‘boxes’ placed in a U shape around a central courtyard. This design was planned so as to take full advantage of the views as well as to provide a variety of indoor and outdoor spaces that could be enjoyed and varying times of the year and parts of the day. The Nelson area has the most hours of sunshine in New Zealand which can make the summers very hot.
We spent many months and travelled all over Asia in our efforts to source unique doors and timbers that would add to the character of this wonderful house. Every piece we found had a story to tell and these stories all add to the magic of Twisted Pine Estate. Massive two hundred year old solid teak doors from Madura and Java in Indonesia create an imposing entrance to the house itself and the master bedroom. The incredible dinner table is hewn from a single piece of antique teak and weighs over a tonne! The bar counter is also old teak and was crafted in Bali.
Hand cut Palimanam stone tiles, a soft sandstone from Bali have been used on floors and walls and volcanic stone blocks from Mount Agung in Bali have been used to create the gardens and ponds.
Antique wooden artifacts, massive stone and ceramic pots and carved stone statues add intrigue and charm to the gardens and create a harmony and peaceful ambience that is absolutely unique.
Twisted Pine House is the product of a wealth of knowledge gathered from experiencing the world, years of planning, ingenious building technology and design, impeccable attention to detail and the coming together of great minds and good fortune. Above all it is product of the love we have for this special part of the world and all we have put into this unique property.

The home is filled with beautiful artworks and furniture collected from the owners’ years in Asia and from their New Zealand collection.
The home is beautifully appointed with designer bathroom fittings, under floor heating and has a splendidly designed and fitted kitchen with granite bench tops and a top of the range Ilve cooker. The kitchen opens onto the most popular alfresco entertainment area where the biggest of parties are held and always centre around the large custom built pizza oven.
The main bedroom and guest accommodation are in the east wing, each with ensuite bathroom. The master bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe with a specially designed two person bath tub in which to soak and gaze out at the views. The study has full broadband connection and looks out to the courtyard.
The decking outside opens up to the surrounding lawns and gardens.
The land surrounding the house has undergone extensive redevelopment and planting, under the guidance of one of the region’s top landscape architects . Hundreds of tonnes of topsoil has been added as well as several tonnes of lime and fertiliser. Numerous fruit trees, varieties of native shrubs and grasses and lavender have been planted throughout along with 100 olive trees that are thriving in the dry loamy soil. The property has its own deep bore which provides superb quality water from over 150 metres down. The flat roofs have a rainwater collection system that directs the clean rainwater to the tanks after having first flushed out the system with the initial rainwater. The state of the art septic tank system is computer controlled and provides clean water we use for irrigation. The lawns, the whole garden area surrounding the house, as well as the perimeter plantings and olive trees have a computerised in-ground sprinkler and irrigation system that uses the collected rainwater.
The main house has a huge three car garage with automatic roller doors in cedar to match the house cladding, work benches, 3 phase power and a vehicle inspection pit.
The whole house and garage has a security system.
