About 20 million years ago, the region of Lake Bracciano was invaded by marshes and sandy plains often invaded by the sea. 4 million years ago, the attitude was shocked by a series of volcanic eruptions that formed the mountains of Tolfa and Ceriti. But it was during the period between 1 million and 500,000 years ago that another series of eruptions gave shape to the area that we see today. In fact, the great eruption of activity that was clear geological basins and deposits of magma underground, overlying land sank as a result, creating depressions of circular shape. And it is precisely when these depressions filled with water that formed the lakes of the area including that of Bracciano. The lake thus is not in the mouth of a volcano but the hole created by the subsidence of the land, the mouths of some craters are those that are adjacent to the gulfs and Trevignano Anguillara. Over the centuries the lake was able to settle and are now virtually absent phenomena such as eddies typical of artificial lakes. Built to 1200 on the orders of Pope Innocent III, the castle was later made more powerful under the Orsini. There were three walls that from the lake at the top of the hill defended the village. On the north side the fortress was defended by a trench that separated dall'altipiano front, while South defense was the natural lake. The destruction caused by soldiers of Borgia in 1497, the carelessness that has been left for centuries, the offense of bad weather and some small aftershocks telluric, have now reduced this mighty fortress to a heap of ruins.
