| The region of Madre de Dios of which Puerto Maldonado is the capital, has seen a steady growth in tourism for several years, and has many successful lodges. The most important attraction is it being the world capital of biodiversity, with the largest amount of different species of animals per square metre. With the development of the Interoceanic motorway, scheduled to be completed within 2-3 years and crossing Puerto Maldonado, that will connect Brazil and Peru, allowing Brasilian goods to reach the Peruvian ports for export, the area is going to benefit greatly from the increased commerce the motorway will bring.
The Interoceanic motorway will also speed up the access by motorway from Cusco and Juliaca. Apart from access by land, Puerto Maldonado can be reached by the river, and has an airport with direct flights to Cusco and Lima. |
