Area Information
Chorao Island is one of Goa’s best kept secrets and is almost unspoiled. A river island situated near the Mandovi estuary. It is convenient for the Capital city of Panaji (Panjim) which is 40 minutes to the south and the market town of Mapusa (30 minutes) to the north, and makes for a very convenient hideaway. If you want the bright lights and sandy beaches of Calangute they are also a 40 minute drive away. There are two ferry crossing points, Maddel-Ribandar at the south end of the Island, which will take you to Panjim and Old Goa. The other is the Chorao-Pomburpa crossing at the north end of the island, which will take you to Pomburpa and the road to Mapusa. Ferries are frequent and run every half hour from 6 am to midnight. After midnight you can request a special crossing for a small fee. Because it is cut off from the mainland (and as yet there are no bridges), Chorao retains its pristine environment and laid back lifestyle. You can still see the odd ox cart go creaking by and the full cacophony of village life passes your door, the sound of children going to school, local vendors shouting undecipherable encouragements to buy fish or vegetables from baskets skilfully balanced on their heads. There are several small shops in the village where you can buy most of your daily supplies. In the past The Portuguese officials working in Panjim lived on Chorao. There are many Portuguese style residences on the island. Chorao has a few tourists who come mainly looking for birds, particularly the Siberian Crane at the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, a lush mangrove area near the Maddel Ferry point. However, it is not just in the bird sanctuary area that one can sight birds. Wild peacocks call from the hilltops and many wading birds can be seen down by the river. Just sitting in the garden at Villa Esna it is not uncommon to see brightly coloured sunbirds, golden oriels, bee-eaters, ring necked parakeets, bulbuls, kingfishers and many more. We have even seen a paradise flycatcher and a hornbill.
