Area Information
Corfu lies off the coast of Albania in the Ionian Sea. It has long attracted visitors from around the world with its elegant architecture, fine cuisine, endless beaches (many with Blue Flags) and wild night life. In 2007, Corfu’s old town - strongly influenced by the Venetian style - was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Immortalised by Gerald Durrell’s My Family and Other Animals, Corfu is one of the best known European holiday resorts, especially among British holiday makers (just under half a million visited at the last count). The Independent recently described Corfu as one of the “loveliest islands” in Greece and it remains one of most popular retirement choices in Europe, all the more so because EasyJet now flies direct scheduled flights four times a week from Gatwick to Corfu. Lord Rothschild, Nana Mouskouri and the Agnelli family all have homes there. The Duke of Edinburgh was born on the Mon Repos estate and Empress Elisabeth of Austria (Sissi) built her summer palace just outside Corfu town. There truly is something for everyone here and despite the rapid pace of change and developments, visitors can still find pockets of the “real” Corfu, where time stays still. The village of Chlomos is one such place. Perched high in the SE hills of Corfu, it has largely escaped the whirlwind developments that have swept over much of the island. While there are three locally run taverna’s/coffee shops, there are no bars or nightclubs in the village. It is peaceful and quiet, especially at night. Chlomos is the only municipality on Corfu to have beaches on both side of the island. On the East coast, beaches are pebbly with wooden pontoons and rarely get crowded even at the height of summer. Nearby Boukari (visible from the balcony) is a quiet port and sandy crescent bordered by the Spiros Karidis fish taverna--one of the best on the island--that was featured on Rick Stein’s Mediterranean Escapes shown on BBC2. The West coast is famous for its long sweep of sand and stunning sunsets. Issos beach was the setting for the 007 film For your eyes only and is bordered on the one side by the clear waters of the Ionian and on the other by a unique cedar forest and Lake Korission--an important water biotope (from where the delicious small fried shrimp on the local menus originate).
