Area Information
Our property is located in Almaceda, a small Portuguese village that nestles amidst the Serra da Gardunha mountains which blend into the southern part of the Serra da Estrela mountains. The Torre, the highest point in Portugal, is about an hours drive away through beautiful rural Central Portugal. Almaceda is an area of rural agriculture. Almost every family has areas and parcels of land that they use to grow olives, grapes, fruit and vegetables. Much of the area is covered in pine forest where abundant wildlife lives. The area is ideal for long walks and rambling while the forest tracks provide good access for four wheel drive vehicles if you want to go exploring. Almaceda has a bakery, two cafe’s, a mini market, an electrical shop, a furniture shop and a small builders supplier and a couple of churches. The centre of the village has been renovated and in the spring and summer provides a large swimming area with grassy areas on which to picnic. There are several social events throughout the year. The main “Council Office” is in the village square. There are many other villages in the surrounding area. All are very quaint and friendly and you will always get a wave or two from the local residents. There are still lots of the old customs and ways of doing things in evidence all around the area. The whole area is steeped in history. There are Roman villages and Templar towers and churches. There are references to Wellington’s battles with the French.
