Sailor's dream home on Cape Breton harbour
|
|
About this 4 - Unusual |
Built in the early 1890s, the elegant blue house is located on a generous waterfront lot in the centre of the village of D’Escousse on Isle Madame, Cape Breton. Meticulously renovated and restored over a 20-year period, it combines the graciousness of the 19th century with the efficiency of the 21st.
On the ground floor are the entrance foyer, living room, library, powder room, back porch, dining room and kitchen (which share the heat-circulating fireplace). The kitchen features glass-fronted cabinetry, and two large pantry cupboards. Its tile floor, range-hood and countertop were new in 2005. The back porch gives access to a 12’ x 12’ deck which overlooks the back lawn and the harbour. The powder room is tucked away under the back staircase.
Upstairs are four large bedrooms and two bathrooms, including an ensuite for the master bedroom. The other bathroom includes the laundry area. Two of the bedrooms – both with lovely harbour views -- are currently used as offices.
Ceilings are 10’ high downstairs and 9’ upstairs. The ingenious design of the house means that every room has two big double-glazed windows (about six feet by three feet) on adjoining outer walls, which makes the house amazingly bright and easy to ventilate. The upstairs windows are European-style vinyl tilt-and-turn models.
The basement has 10-foot heights throughout, a dry concrete floor, and built-in workshop space. The water filtration system is also in the basement, along with firewood storage and a recently-installed combination oil/wood hot-air furnace. Double garage doors into the cellar allow a pick-up truck full of firewood to drive inside, right to the furnace.
The front yard features several flower gardens, a robust lilac bush, several hawthorns and a variety of other plants including a star magnolia -- a rare plant in this northern latitude. A hedge of spirea and japonica defines the western boundary of the lot, and a 20-foot cedar hedge defines the the east side.
Between the cedars and the house, two vine-draped board fences form a completely sheltered and private garden space which includes plum, apple and cherry trees as well as a patio and a fire-pit. The deck at the back of the house overlooks the shore, the harbour and the yacht club, which is just steps away. A brick walkway leads from the deck to a gazebo tucked in beside the cedars, facing outward towards the harbour.
And yes, the hurricane-strength mooring directly behind the house goes with it.
