About this 5 - Barn Conversion

Detached stone built conversion dating back to circa 1850. Restored and improved by ourselves to provide spacious 5 bedroom family accommodation whilst retaining many character features. The property is set in landscaped grounds of approximately a third of an acre and the current owners also rent a further 2 acre paddock with stables, which subject to confirmation may be available to the new owners. Idyllic location with magnificent views and ease of access to good local schools and amenities provide the best of both worlds.

The barn with its striking central arch through the building was built around 1850 and is thought to have been home to a variety of livestock during its working life as well as having a shippon at one end. “When we first saw it,” continues Darren, “the barn was divided into two properties and was used as self contained holiday cottages. In some ways it was everything we didn’t want – a barn, a lounge on the first floor and a lot of work. But it has been the best decision we’ve made, to live here. We’ve enjoyed every minute of it and loved everything about the house.”

The couple took on the services of a local architect during their conversion into one home. The brief was, that as much of the living space as possible had to make the most of the magnificent views towards Ingleborough. “Our lounge is still on the first floor and superb. It has huge windows looking out over the garden and feels very calm and tranquil. The majority of living rooms and bedrooms share these views of the panoramas into the distance.

“The grounds are about 1/3 of an acre and have been landscaped. They include a large York Stone patio, a sun terrace, a substantial pond and our organic vegetable garden. It’s totally enclosed and is perfectly safe for children and dogs. This house has provided us with so much space. In addition to five bedrooms we have kennels and a dog run, plus a beautiful conservatory. It’s a toss up really between the conservatory and the lounge as to which room we enjoy most. Everywhere is very light and airy but these two rooms are where you can sit and be captured by the spectacular views and sunshine. The conservatory gets the sun all day long and the lounge, being higher up, drinks in the sunsets particularly well.

“We’re going to be sad to leave Cantsfield,” continues Darren. “It’s an idyllic hamlet in which to live – there is a stream running through the centre and it’s the sort of place where herds of cows and sheep are still driven along the road. We’re about six miles from Ingleton, four miles from Kirby Lonsdale and about five miles from Bentham – all beautiful places to visit. We’re about half an hour’s drive from the Lake District and the same in travelling time from the Yorkshire Dales. We’re also equidistant from Junctions 34, 35 and 36 of the M6 - allowing easy access to the motorway network, regardless of the direction in which you wish to travel.

If you’re after essentials then Tunstall with its shop is two minutes drive or a 10 minute walk across the fields and there is also a local cooperative shop in nearby Burton which beaks great bread and pastries. For a larger range of shops and supermarkets you have a choice between Carnforth 15 minutes drive, Lancaster 20 minutes away and Kendal 25 minutes.

“This house has been a real haven; the home where we’ve brought up our children. It’s been a fabulous base for the schools they’ve enjoyed and was perfect for me in my job. We’re going to miss living here.”
