Monumental mansion bought from the Spanish aristocratic Morenes family, who had been the owners for hundreds of years, to make it their summer-residence and wine/olive-oil farm. At least one of those centuries they didn't manage to keep the house in repair very well, so, as many other monumental buildings in Spain, it was gradually and irrevocably given up to decay. During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) army-units of both sides stayed in the house, which also did not benefit its state. We restored the house to its former splendour step by step and at the same time we created its interior into something very special. As the house had rather little ornamentation of its own, it offered the chance to add a uniqueness to each of the nicely situated rooms. In order to achieve this, artists and decorators were being invited in summer to contribute their expertise . The main part of the house was erected in the 19th century over the full length of the walled garden. In that same century the tower was built on the foundation of a medieval 'donjon'. The mansion has a natural grandeur, if only because of its size and, especially in the eyes of foreigners, it has unique qualities. Visitors should be taken by surprise by the special character of the house and its furnishings. At the same time they feel at home in the house, sitting at the long gallery-tables. Besides the 8 bedrooms, 4 reception rooms and 3 bathrooms the mansion has 2 kitchens, 2 towerrooms, 2 still unused rooms, a bodega, a large conservatory and sheds. The mansion is situated in a village both perfectly ordinary and quite unique, situated in the Baix Penedes, a Catalonian wine-district, most European of all Spanish regions. Lying at a mere 8 km from the seaside, in an unkempt area between coast and inland, this little village with its southern atmosphere and its white houses rests quietly in the midday sun, only to come to life towards the end of a summer-evening and during the Fiesta Major. Built around two big houses, it still has all the charm of the rugged Spanish country-side, which to this day is far from the swept-up, fenced-in and over-organized world. 'Mol macha' as one of the senior villagers nicely puts it. The village consists of less then 60 houses and 100 inhabitants. The people are very friendly, welcoming and, being a small village, it´s extremely safe, including for children playing on the street. The village frequently organise ´fiestas´ or nice meals for the neighbourhood. You´re likely to be invited to join the festivities. Although it´s a small village, it certainly isn´t isolated. All amenities are within short distance as the village lies in the centre of a populated valley. You´ll find several supermarkets within 3 km. , a brand new hospital lies at 2 km. , cinemas, daily fresh markets, shops, railwaystations into the rest of Spain, excellent motorways it´s all there. The clean sandy beach can be found at about 8 km, or 10 minutes in car but because the whole coastline consists of yellow sandy beaches, there´s never a problem parking your car and finding a place to spread out your beachtowels. THE AREA The Penedes is a beautiful area with many things to do. Barcelona with all it´s culture and attractions is only at 60 km or 45 minutes by easy trainride away. The delightful Roman city of Tarragona lies at 30 km. The Penedes itself is renowned for it´s wines and champain (´Cava´) , so finding a winehouse (´Bodega´) to experience a winetasting won´t be any problem. The valley is about 10 km wide and quite populated, but on both sides are large nature reserves where you can walk or mountainbike. There are many beaches, all with the famous yellow sand that gave the coast its name (Costa Dorada = Golden Coast) . More inland you´ll find historic cities like Montblanc or Prades and you´ll find some of the most beautiful examples of Gothic architecture in the convents of Poblet and Santes Creus.
