| Tourism: Tomar and the Knights Templar
The Knights Templars region was home to two of the great pillars of Portuguese History: the Order of the Knights Templars and the Order of Christ.
Discover this ancient region with so much still to tell of the almost mythical monastic order - the Knights Templars. It was these warrior monks that came to the aid of the first Christian kings in their struggle against the Moors.
Get inside this history and visit the Convent of Cristo, the largest example of its kind in the History of Portuguese Art. The national birthplace of the Knights Templars, the convent was restored by king Manuel I who endowed it with all the architectural splendour still visible today.
The convent also served as home to that most celebrated Order of Christ governor, Prince Henry the Navigator who did much of the planning for the great missions involved in the Portuguese Voyages of Discovery.
Nearby the Convent, pay a visit to the Mata dos 7 Montes (the 7 Hill Forest), ideal for a romantic stroll or some more energetic exercise. And there is also excellent walking in the Mouchăo Park gardens through which the river Nabăo flows.
Not far from the city of Tomar, there are all the recreational facilities provided by one of Portugal’s largest reservoirs - Castelo de Bode. Embark for a peaceful cruise with lunch served on board. Alternatively, pick any one of the various water sports available.
